TERRY MAGOVERN, REST IN PEACE

It is with great sadness that we report that longtime Springsteen associate and close friend Terry Magovern, 67, passed away in his sleep on Monday night. For the last 20 years, Magovern could be seen regularly at Springsteen’s side. An imposing figure, seemingly the walking embodiment of “You better be good for goodness sake” wherever he accompanied Springsteen, Magovern had a kind and gracious nature, one pleasantly at odds with his professional image. Magovern began working for Springsteen in 1987, but the two had already known each other for decades by that point. They met at the Upstage in Asbury Park in the late ’60s; “Right from the first time I heard [Bruce] play,” Magovern told journalist Robert Santelli, “I believed in him and his music.” In 1971, as manager of the Captain’s Garter in Neptune, Magovern hired the Bruce Springsteen Band to play.In the years that followed, Magovern managed a number of Shore clubs, including Clarence Clemons’ Big Man’s West in Red Bank. By the time he went on the road with Springsteen for the Tunnel of Love Express Tour in 1988, he had a wealth of experience in the music business. He has been an intergral part of Springsteen’s work life ever since.

It would be hard to overestimate the impact Magovern’s loss will have on those with whom he worked, just as it’s hard to pin down what his job actually was. Magovern was “Road Manager” on the Tom Joad tour, “Personal Assistant” on the Rising tour… but just as often his official role was no more (and no less) than being himself, as in the multiple tourbooks that list the credit, “Terry Magovern: Terry Magovern.” Personal aide, liaison, researcher, reconnaissance man, right-hand man, right arm… Magovern played a larger role than we can probably know in helping Springsteen navigate the demands of his profession and get his music to the masses. And he touched many other lives along the way. Our hearts go out to all those who knew and loved him.

Magovern’s death follows that of his fiance, Joan Dancy, from ALS in 2005; after Dancy passed away, Magovern established an organization in her honor to help others who suffer from ALS. Donations, in lieu of flowers, will help that group’s continuing work: The Joan Dancy & PALS Support Group, Riverview Medical

Bruce Springsteen with The SSB - Devils & Dust

Published by benz under Uncategorized Edit This

Great solo song

Lyrics below

I got my finger on the trigger
But I don’t know who to trust
When I look into your eyes
There’s just devils and dust
We’re a long, long way from home, Bobbie
Home’s a long, long way from us
I feel a dirty wind blowing
Devils and dust

I got God on my side
And I’m just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear’s a powerful thing, baby
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It’ll take your God filled soul
And fill it with devils and dust

Well I dreamed of you last night
In a field of blood and stone
The blood began to dry
The smell began to rise
Well I dreamed of you last night, Bobbie
In a field of mud and bone
Your blood began to dry
And the smell began to rise

We’ve got God on our side
We’re just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear’s a powerful thing, baby
It’ll turn your heart black you can trust
It’ll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
It’ll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

[Harmonica solo]

Now every woman and every man
They wanna take a righteous stand
Find the love that God wills
And the faith that He commands
I’ve got my finger on the trigger
And tonight faith just ain’t enough
When I look inside my heart
There’s just devils and dust

Well I’ve got God on my side
And I’m just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear’s a dangerous thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It’ll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
Yeah it’ll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

ROCKIN’ AND A-REELIN’ AT THE BASIE

Published by benz under Uncategorized Edit This

Brian Wilson played Red Bank, NJ last night, for the Beach Bash at the Basie, the Count Basie Theatre’s 5th annual gala fundraiser — and a local hero joined in for some fun, fun, fun. A particular auction item earlier in the evening might have been a tip-off: a Challenger surfboard signed by both Wilson and Bruce Springsteen. The surprise guest spot came during Wilson’s encore, when “The Boss!” was introduced for “Barbara Ann.” Springsteen played rhythm on a white Les Paul, stepping up for a solo, too, and he shared a mic with the sax player to sing along on the chorus. For the final song, Bruce was back sans guitar to sing harmonies on “Love and Mercy” from Wilson’s 1988 self-titled solo debut.

You Got To Be Kidding Me

Published by benz under Bruce News, Uncategorized Edit This

newssimonc.jpgSIMON SAYS…
The Beatles, bigger than Jesus? We might be willing to grant you that. Simon Cowell, bigger than Springsteen? In a CBS interview, the American Idol judge tells Anderson Cooper:

“I sell more records than Bruce Springsteen. In the last five years, I’ve probably sold over 100 million records. If [Springsteen] got 100 [million dollars], I should have got 500.”
[Click here for more and to watch a clip]

Judges?

“It started out really pitchy for me — that whole sell-more-records-than-Bruce thing… I mean, they’re not your records, right? But then you went on, and I’m like aiight, aiight, you’re funny, you’re doin’ your thing, you’re workin’ it out! By the end, though, man… I don’t know, I think you need to try to watch the ego. That was just a little weird for me, dawg.”

The Cowell profile airs on 60 Minutes this Sunday, March 18, at 7 ET/PT.

October 29 / Oslo, NOR / Spektrum

Notes: An equipment truck jackknifes on the way to Oslo, but damage is mimimal and the show goes on. “Atlantic City” moves to the opening slot and “Growin’ Up” returns to the set; “Fire” once again opens the encore. A real highlight is the return of “Land of Hope and Dreams” — Springsteen’s modern contribution to the folk canon this show celebrates, and a natural for this tour — which debuted in Barcelona and is played for just the second time here.

First Night Italy

Published by benz under Site News, Uncategorized Edit This

October 1 / Bologna, ITA /Palamalaguti
Notes: After a three-month summer vacation, the Seeger Sessions Band rides again! Tonight in Bologna, Bruce and the band kicked off their 27-night European tour with the first of seven, count ‘em, seven shows in Italy. Proof that crazy pays — and I mean that in the best way, amici miei. Two tour debuts mark the occasion: a new Irish arrangement of “The River,” and, following “Saints” in the encore as the night’s penultimate song, “This Little Light of Mine.” “American Land,” a Bruce original which debuted in June to open the final three shows of the U.S. leg (and which is featured as the title track of the new We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions edition due Tuesday) moves to the show-closing spot.
Setlist: John Henry/O Mary Don’t You Weep/Old Dan Tucker/Eyes on the Prize/Jesse James/Atlantic City/The River/My Oklahoma Home/If I Should Fall Behind/Mrs. McGrath/How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?/Jacob’s Ladder/We Shall Overcome/Open All Night/Pay Me My Money Down
Encore: My City of Ruins/You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)/When the Saints Go Marching In/This Little Light of Mine/American Land
