Here is a nice gift

Published by benz under Holiday Gifts Edit This

As they did last year, the National Priorities Project is auctioning a print of this beautiful Annie Leibovitz photograph of Springsteen in 1999, previously seen in her book, American Music. Up for auction on eBay now, it’s a large (20″ x 24″), limited edition print (Artist Proof #6), signed by the photographer, and valued at $5,500. The auction runs from Thursday, July 19 to Sunday July 29. Click here to go to the eBay auction page. The photograph was taken on September 20, 1999, backstage at the First Union Center in Philadelphia (show #3 of the 6 nights in Philly). Clearly visible is the previous night’s setlist, to ensure the requisite setlist changes from night to night. At the moment captured, Bruce had only written that night’s list up to “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out.” The guitar he’s holding and book of songs he’s looking at suggest that he’s deciding — at that very moment — what to play in the famous “post-Tenth” slot in the setlist, often the biggest setlist surprise on any given night… Philly got “Back in Your Arms” that night.

THE ROAD TO DUBLIN

Published by benz under Buy Music, Holiday Gifts Edit This

With PBS stations around the country to air a cut of Live in Dublin in June — NJN Public Television got out of the gate early, premiering footage last week for viewers in Jersey — they’ll also be offering an exclusive five-track CD as an incentive to pledge. If you only care about the music, this’ll be one of the more expensive CDs you could add to your collection… but if you want to support Public Television, it’s a fine bonus. Five live tracks that didn’t make the cut for Live in Dublin will be found here: “Bobby Jean,” “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” “Johnny 99,” “For You,” and “My City of Ruins.” Check with your local PBS station for details on pledge drives and air dates.

As for that NJN airing, we’re reserving judgment until we see the DVD itself — and we’ll be looking for yours then, too, with a readers’ poll. But we can’t ignore reports we’re hearing bemoaning the quick cuts that have been in vogue for far too long. Bill Kenney tells us: “Maybe it’s not that bad, but the snippets I saw of Live in Dublin on the NJN fundraiser have the same claustrophobic feel the previous videos had on AOL (and right through the American Land DVD), and with that MTV-style choppy cutting to boot, that sucks the life out of what was a vibrant, buoyant, spacious stage show. Maybe it was hard to capture that feel, even with nine cameras, but I think the editing is repetitive, and the lighting seems really dark as well. But musically, there were some pretty cool versions of ‘Growin’ Up,’ ‘Further On (Up the Road),’ a great ‘This Little Light of Mine,’ and promising clips of a bunch of others like ‘Highway Patrolman,’ and ‘Atlantic City.’” Read more reports on BTX — and if you’ve seen it, feel free to chime in.

Come release day, June 5, there will be four different configurations of Live in Dublin to choose from: A 2-CD set, a standard DVD, a combination of those two as a 2-CD/DVD set, and a Blu-ray disc [a hi-res video format, click here for more info]. We’ll start taking pre-orders next week at Backstreet Records, and we always appreciate your support; if you’re a collector, though, you may want to jump on FYE’s pre-sale, as they’re throwing in an exclusive 11 x 17 poster.

www.backstreets.com

Don’t you weep, we’ve gotcha covered.
Yes, the season is upon us. And if you’re gearing up to shop for your favorite Boss fan, our online catalog is packed with a wide variety of Springsteen stuff — hundreds of Bruce items in stock, just waiting for a stocking near you. We’ve just added a ton of of new goodies — a great E Street Band hooded sweatshirt, Devils & Dust T-shirts, and many more items new to our shelves. Plus, seasonal items are back, like Gary Tallent’s Christmas compilation CD (To:Kate). Check our latest arrivals page for lots more.

And then there’s our regular stock, with more official CDs, videos, books, vinyl, and concert shirts than you can shake a stick at. Two of our books, Dave Marsh’s On Tour and Robert Santelli’s Greetings From E Street, come with free posters, exclusive to Backstreets — you’ll find these nowhere else.

The gift that keeps on giving, of course, is a subscription to Backstreets Magazine. Using our online gift subscription form, you can type in a message to go on the gift card that will accompany your lucky giftee’s first issue. Back issues of Backstreets make a fine stocking stuffer, too.

Whether you’re looking to spend a little (”Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” on CD-single) or a lot (the Limited Edition package of Eric Meola’s new Born to Run book is a beauty!), we’ve surely got something that’ll fit the bill.

The Big Payback: When you order from Backstreet Records, your hard-earned money directly supports Backstreets.com, BTX, and Backstreets Magazine — and since we’ve kept advertising minimal, magazine subscription prices low, and all this online muckety-muck free of charge, that support really makes a difference.

Run, Run, Rudolph!: For orders placed by December 10, we can guarantee standard delivery to any U.S. address will arrive in time for Christmas. If you order after that date, or simply need something faster, we offer 2-day and Overnight service at a reeeeasonable price. Of course, we ship all over the world, and while we can’t guarantee the timing of an international shipment (if you’re having something sent outside of the U.S., we recommend ordering as early as possible if you’re hoping for delivery before Christmas), we’ll be working hard this holiday season to fulfill orders as quickly as possible. Check out our online catalog, thanks as always for your support, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Gifts For The Bruce Fan

Published by benz under Holiday Gifts Edit This

• Bruce Springsteen on Tour , 1968-2005 , Dave Marsh (Bloomsbury, $39.95): A lavish pictorial history of the Boss ranges from his days in groups such as the Castiles and Earth and Steel Mill (check out the amazing photo of him playing a jam session at the Upstage, circa 1969) through the formation of the E Street Band and his subsequent conquering of the rock ’n’ roll world. As recently as 2003, one photo shows, Springsteen was still able to hang upside down on a microphone stand.
